CHAPTER ONE
Kay Bennett watched the happy couple through the safety of her bedroom window, jealousy seeping through her veins. She watched Charity smile that big happy smile that would light up Miguel's face, and wished that she was the one who was making him smile like that. Things had been like that with her before Charity ever came to town.
It was the little things Kay missed doing with Miguel the most. Like playing space computer games, each trying to beat each others scores. Kay remembered they used to do that every New Years, it was something she looked forward to since her parents never let her go out to New Years Eve parties. She never minded though, she was having just as much fun staying in the house.
Then of course there were the softball games. She hated softball, she only joined so she could be near Miguel. They were best friends and did everything together. Almost.
Kay remembered the day she fell in love with Miguel. How could she ever forget, it changed her life in so many ways.
The sun had never shone brighter that day, as 13 year old Kay and Miguel decided to take a walk through the park. Kay couldn't think that her life could get much better then it already was. In her eyes, she had everything a person could want, and more. Two devoted parents who were still very much in love, unlike many of her friend's parents. She was quite popular in school, and had a crowd of friends she knew she could count on and that would always be there for her. What more could a 13 year old want?
As they walked along the path, Kay felt a certain air form about her. This was something she had never felt before and there was no way to explain it. Kay gazed into Miguel's eyes and suddenly there was magic in the world. She felt herself growing up, becoming a new person almost. The park shone that day, and to her all the magic lay in the eyes of Miguel, her childhood best friend, and the boy she had grown to love with all her heart and soul.
Miguel took her hand, not thinking much of it at the time. It seemed fitting though. So, as two best friends, and maybe something more, Kay and Miguel, hand and hand, continued their walk.
Like a slap in the face, "I love you Charity," floated through the open window and snapped Kay out of her peaceful flashback. She was faced with the harsh reality that all her dreams and hopes for the future were never going to happen. Charity took those things from her, and now her life was far from perfect.
Soon after Charity came to town, the friends that Kay thought would always be there for her, soon turned on her and sided with Charity. The parents she thought loved her more than anything were now devoting all their free time to seeing that Charity's needs were met. She was so sick of hearing about Charity's needs. What about her needs? Did they not matter to anyone?
She guessed that they did not matter to Miguel anymore, now that he had his sweet little Charity. The angel Charity, pure perfection. Gag. Kay wondered why she was the only one who could see through Charity's sugarcoated masks, into the hollow person that she truly was.
"Oh Miguel, I just love spending time with you! You make me feel so special," Charity's sickly sweet voice rang out. You are nothing without Miguel, Charity. Kay thought bitterly. You're just a painted up version of what everyone wants you to be, expects you to be. Yeah, Miguel makes you feel special because you can't make yourself feel special.
"Ok Mom, just a second!" Kay yelled back as she tried to get her depressing thoughts in order. She must put on a happy face for her family.
Kay hopped out of bed and made her way to the kitchen, just as she saw the two lovebirds themselves coming in from the yard, hand and hand. She tried not to notice that little detail.
"Hey Miguel," Kay greeted, ignoring Charity completely.
"Oh, hey Kay," Miguel replied not paying much attention. He turned his attentions to Grace, and with big puppy dog eyes he begged. "Please Mrs. Bennett, can I stay for supper? Blueberry pie is my favorite!"
Kay frowned as she saw the drool running down his chin. Don't they feed you at home she thought.
"Of course you can stay," Grace let out a laugh. "I know blueberry pie is your favorite, you and Kay used to come in here all the time and beg me to make it when you were little,"
At the mention of blueberry pie memories, Kay let out a big sigh. If only things could still be that way again, life would be perfect.
A look of relief washed over Miguel's face. "That's great, just let me call Mama and tell her I'm staying," He walked over to the phone and punched in his phone number.
Sam came in the door just then, and wrapped his muscular arms around his wife, Grace. Noticing Miguel over by the phone, Sam commented "Miguel is over here so much, it's a wonder that boy doesn't have his own address mixed up with ours,"
Grace looked a little guilty at the thought of displeasing Sam, so she explained "Well, he was saying how much he loved blueberry pie and all..."
Sam gave her a big, warm smile. "No need to explain, I don't mind him staying here," Sam assured.
After Miguel got off the phone, he asked "Wheres Jess?"
"I think she's over at her friend Mary's house," Kay told him. Secretly she was glad that Jessica wasn't around, Kay was going to use this night to her full advantage in order to seduce Miguel. She didn't want Jessica there to get in the way of any of her plans.
"Kay, why so quiet tonight?" Miguel asked, actully worried about his best friend.
"Oh, it's nothing Miguel. Don't worry yourself about it," Kay looked down at her plate again. She knew he wasn't really worried about her, he was just saying that because he was a nice guy.
A look of concern crossed Miguel's face, he hated to see Kay hurting. He had to admit, it was probably because of him though. Lately they had been spending hardly any time together because most of his time had been taken up by Charity. He was sorry for that, he really was, but Charity was so needy. She had been through so many terrible things in the past year, he thought she might break down at any moment. Kay didn't need him, he was sure of that. She was always the strong one.
"Are you sure?" Miguel asked after a moment, looking her in the eye. "Is it something I've done?"
Kay was about to answer him, but Charity pushed back her pie plate just then and got up from the table. She smiled at Miguel and annouced "I think I'm going to go to the mall tonight to get some new clothes. Would you like to join me Miguel?" She asked sweetly, not bothering to invite Kay.
"Ok, sure," Miguel agreed, knowing that the last place he wanted to be was at the mall, lugging Charity's many shopping bags around, but he did what he had to do.
He turned his head back to Kay and waited for her reply. "Go on, I think I'm just going to stay home and curl up with a good movie and a bag of popcorn," She was hoping Miguel would take the hint and decide to join her, instead of going to the mall with Charity.
She could picture the scene now.
They were both seated on the sofa, Miguel had his arm around her and they shared a big soft blanket. There was a roaring fire in the fireplace, and the movie they had rented was very romantic and sexy.
A perfect way to get Miguel to open up about his feelings for her. She pressed her head against his chest and gazed into his eyes. "I've never felt this way about anyone, not even Charity," Miguel told her.
"Me either," Kay told him in a dreamy state.
"I never knew you thought of Charity that way," Miguel was surprized.
Kay blushed. "Uhh...never mind," She stroked his cheek and he pulled her in for a long kiss. Just as their lips were meeting...
"Kay? You look sort of far away. Is something the matter?" Damn it, Charity's voice cut in at the best part!
"Oh...no, I was just thinking of something," Kay replied softly.
"Well I'll see you when I get back from the mall," Charity tugged on Miguel's arm. "Let's go," she playfully said.
Kay frowned. "Where are you getting all this money all of a sudden from anyways? I thought you spent all your money on ice cream yesterday,"
"Kay, don't put Charity on the spot like that," Grace warned.
Charity shrugged. "I had some money left over,"
"Yeah, okay, whatever Kay," Miguel said, obiously in a glum mood at the thought of trailing the mall with Charity.
With a somewhat devilish glint in her eyes, Charity sat back down and exclaimed "Oh, Miguel! You didn't finish your pie, here let me help you finish it-" Her hand collieds with Miguel's half full glass of milk, drenching Miguel.
Charity burst into tears and cried "I am sooo sorry Miguel!! I swear, I did not mean to do that! Oh my god...Kay will you grab some paper towel and help him clean up,"
"I know you didn't mean to do it," Miguel went to embrace her.
"Ewww...don't touch me! You're all full of milk!" Charity moved away.
"Oh yeah I forgot...sorry Charity,"
As Miguel got cleaned up, Charity silently slipped out the door into the unknown. Once outside, she let out a big laugh and ran to meet her new boyfriend. She couldn't wait to see him, finally someone with a personality!
"Aah, sweet Charity there you are," a man gushed within in the shawdows.
