CHAPTER 3
Flashback seven years before
The water seemed like a million miles away, from up there on the diving board. The board felt hard and rough beneath Kay's feet, and she trembled looking down into the swirling water she would soon have to dive into.
It had started as a dare. Kay's younger sister, Jessica, had dared her one Saturday afternoon, after hearing Kay brag about how she was not afraid of anything proudly to Miguel. Jessica knew that Kay was scared of water, so this was the perfect dare. No way would she ever agree to do this, Jessica thought, she'll chicken out for sure.
Turns out she didn't know Kay as well as she thought she did. Sure, Kay was scared, she was shaking actully, but she wouldn't back down. Not from this. She had to show Miguel that she was strong, no matter what her fears were.
So they decided that Kay would use the swimming pool and diving board after school on Monday. Miguel would be watching, as well as her good friends Simone and Reese. All eyes were on Kay.
This was it. Jessica was going to count down from five in just a second, and when she was done, Kay was going to have to face her biggest fear.
She looked over at Miguel and he gave her a reassuring smile. "You can do it, Kay!" he mouthed to her.
That was all she needed to hear. She was going to do this.
"Kay is so brave!" Reese swooned. "What a woman,"
""What a woman,"" Jessica mocked. "Oh-puhleeze! Spare me you moronic lovesick puppy," The truth was, Jessica had a slight crush on Reese, although she'd never admit to it in a million years. It pained her to see him drooling over her own sister.
Reese, attempting not to burst into tears, yelled at Jessica "That was so mean!"
"I know," Jessica turned her attentions from Reese to Kay, and began to count down. "Five,"
I'm going to do this, Kay assured herself. Just don't look down.
"Four,"
Be strong Kay. You're not a loser, you're a winner...
"Three,"
Everything started to spin around her. Spinning out of control.
"Two,"
It's not that far down...it's not that far down. She had to keep telling herself that.
"O-on-e," Jessica slowly said, dragging out the word for all it was worth.
Kay felt like she was flying a million miles down and then all at once she felt the cold water hit her face and she knew it was over. As she surfaced the water, she saw Miguel's smiling face first thing and knew it had all been worth it.
The next year she joined the swim team.
"Yo, yo, chill out. I ain't plannin on tellin' Miguel anythin, I was just askin, alright?" Chad assured her. "So when has this started anyways?"
Kay shrugged. She didn't want to tell Chad the whole truth, that she had been interested in Miguel for as long as she could remember. Then he might put two and two together and figure out that she was the one behind Charity getting soaked by fish guts on prom night. And that would not be a good thing. Even though she didn't know Chad that well, she knew him well enough to know that he would go running to Miguel or Charity.
"Just recently," she lied.
"Well are ya gonna do anythin about it?" Chad asked her. "I mean, I know she's yo cousin and everythin, and yo' I understand dat, but da girl is BORING wit a capital B, yo!"
Kay smiled, she had to agree with Chad on that one.
"So like I was sayin-" Chad was interuppted by a knock on the door.
"Ugh! I bet that's Jessica," Kay groaned as she went to answer the door. Sure enough, it was. Jessica carried her sleepover bags in her hands and wore a sullen expression on her face.
"Mary and I got into a fight,"
"Aah, so I suppose she couldn't take anymore of your "charming personality"?" Kay gloated. She was glad her sister was finally getting part of what she deserved, after all the times she had stabbed her in the back.
Jessica was about to stomp up the stairs to her room, when she turned around and asked. "Where's Charity, anyways? Have you seen her?"
Kay was so sick of everyone asking where Charity was. For God's sake, the girl was 16 years old, she didn't need a babysitter! "No, I haven't seen the princess, maybe you should check the castle. She's probably there shining her crown,"
"Ok, ok," Jessica sighed, knowing Kay was in one of her moods. "I was just asking,"
Kay realized she was being a little harsh on her sister, and that the anger she was displaying was probably coming from somewheres else. "Sorry Jess, I guess I just have a lot on my mind, that's all,"
"Like Miguel?" Jessica teased, watching Kay's cheeks turn red.
Kay grinned. "Well, maybe. He's in the living room watching a movie now. If only I could get Chad and Theresa out of there,"
Chad had been listening in one the conversation. "Yo, we can leave if it's cuttin into yo plans too much," he offered.
"That would be great," Kay said, happy that she would finally get some time alone with Miguel, "You'll just need to come up with a good excuse as to why you're leaving,"
"I can handle that, no prob," Chad assured her.
Jessica went up to her bedroom to sulk some more, while Kay and Chad made their way into the living room where Miguel and Theresa had already started watching the movies.
"Wow, that sure took long enough," Miguel eyed their empty hands. "Where are the nachos anyways? Did you eat them without us?"
"Uhh, yeah. I got sort of hungry," Kay nervously bit her lip.
"Yo, I think I should split," Chad slapped his head with his hand. "I just remembered I have a late shift at the Book Cafe, so I'll catch yall later,"
"Ok, bye Chad," Theresa said, not making any moves to get up.
"Yo, Theresa...uhh, why don't yo come back to Da Book Cafe wit me? It gets kind of lonely there after dark," Chad invited, hoping Theresa would take the hint.
"Sure, I'd love to," Theresa got up with an eager smile on her face. She went over by Miguel and whispered in his ear "I think Chad likes me!"
What about Ethan? Miguel thought, clueless as to what Chad's true motives were.
"So I guess I'll see yall later," and with that, Chad and Theresa were out the door heading for The Book Cafe, leaving a puzzled Miguel to stare after them.
"Is it just me, or have those two been acting weird tonight?" Miguel wondered.
Kay shrugged. "Not any weirder then they normally act, I guess,"
"TC would be quite mad, wouldn't he?" Charity went on, enjoying watching Julian squim. "I bet that could even make him...well, you know,"
Julian gulped. "After all I've done for you!" he cried.
"After all you've done for me? AFTER ALL YOU'VE DONE FOR ME?" an enraged Charity yelled. "Yes, using me, taking my virginity, making me feel like a dirty little slut, making me be unfaithful to my boyfriend....OH YES Julian, you've done so much for me!"
"Eve spoke those very same words," Julian smirked. "Only thing is, she was wrong THEN, and you're wrong NOW. I didn't make you do anything sister, you did that fine all on your own,"
"That's not true-" Charity began, but Julian cut her off.
"I didn't make you sleep with me, you AGREED to! You AGREED to be unfaithful to your little boyfriend, Mcwell-"
"Miguel,"
"Whatever. Anyways, like I was saying, this is all your own doing, so why should I take the blame for it? And don't tell me you didn't enjoy it...because I know that's not true," Julian grinned as he thought about what took place only hours before.
"No, Julian, that's where you couldn't be more wrong," Charity was talking really slow, each word sending a chill down Julian's spine. "You got me when I was vulnrable, when I couldn't see any other way out. Do you know how many times I cried myself to sleep at night, wishing, just wishing, that I had real friends who didn't whisper about me behind my back? Do you know what its like to have everyone hate you, to have your own FAMILY hate you? Do you know what it's like wanting to die? No, of course not, because you're Julian Crane, and you don't have a fucking problem in the world," She was close to tears now, but she didn't let them fall.
"And then you came along, with the "answers" to all my problems. Although I didn't know I was really digging my own grave. You took advantage of me, you knew all my weak points and you played on them so well, didn't you? Well," Charity took in a deep breath, ready to deliver the final blow. "Now I've got a weak point of yours, and I intend to play it well. I want a check for $10 000 by tomorrow morning, or TC will know everything....and I'm afraid you won't be here much longer,"
"Ok, $10 000 it is, money is no option," Julian stammered, shaking with fear. "Just please don't tell TC! He'll kill me!"
"Then we have a deal. Now drive me home," Charity barked.
"Miguel, this movie is such a bore! Why don't we take a short walk in the park instead?" Kay suggested, hoping the park would be a little bit more romantic than watching peoples heads get blown off.
"I'd like to Kay, but I should wait here in case Charity comes back. She's been gone quite a while,"
"Oh," She felt her hopes plumit. It was always about Charity. "Come on Miguel, it will only be for a little while. Jessica will be here so it's not like Charity will be all alone," she pressed.
"Well, ok," Miguel gave in. "I could use some fresh air anyways,"
Kay went to get her coat. "I'm sure Charity will be fine," she continued.
"I hope so. Charity's been through so much this past year, she isn't the same person I fell in love with last summer," Miguel sighed.
Kay felt hope surge through her veins. Miguel was finally having doubts about Charity! This was the time she should make her move. Kay and Miguel stepped out into the cool night air and headed towards the park, making small talk along the way. It was the first time in a while that they were able to have a conversation about little things, and not Charity. It felt good.
One they got to the park, Kay sat down on one of the swings, feeling like a little girl again.
"Boy, it's been a long time since I've done this," she joked.
"Yeah, me too," Miguel admitted, shaking his head. "I remember we used to come here all the time as kids and wait for the stars and the moon to come out,"
The full moon was out that night, and the stars seemed to dance in the sky.
"Miguel?" Kay's lip was starting to quiver, she could feel the heat between them, she just didn't know if he felt it too. She had to find out.
