"Ethan have you noticed anything strange about Theresa lately?" Ivy probed her son as he came in the room.
"How do you mean, Mom?" Ethan replied innocently.
I'm not exactly sure. It's almost like she's lost her spirit"
Ethan drifted into the memory of Theresa's soft lips. How could I have let her leave?
"No, Mom, I haven't noticed, but I haven't seen or spoke to Theresa in a week." Ethan said as he headed upstairs.
"She won't return any of calls and avoids me every chance. What I have done?" Ethan said to himself as he entered his room.
He grabbed the scarf on the night stand as he fell on the bed. "I can still smell her perfume." He thought as he lovingly rubbed Theresa's scarf across his cheek. He looked around the room. He could still see her image in the mirror. Theresa's beauty is not only on the outside but it runs so much deeper on the inside.
"I have got to see her!" Ethan exclaimed as he jumped out of bed.
"Pilar, This is Ethan, is Theresa there? I need to speak with her. It's urgent!" Ethan persisted.
"I'm sorry Ethan, she's not here." Pilar replied.
"Do you know where I could find her?" Ethan asked urgently.
"I think she and Whitney are at the Book Café."
"Thank you, Pilar." Ethan hung up and ran out the door.
"Theresa are you okay? You've been acting strange lately." Whitney asked as she sipped her cappuccino.
Theresa touched her lips as she reminisced of the kiss she and Ethan shared last week.
"Theresa!" Whitney shouted waking Theresa from her trance.
"I'm sorry Whit. What did you say?" Theresa asked shaking her head.
"Theresa, what has gotten into you?" Whitney questioned.
"Nothing Whit, I'm just kinda out of it." Theresa explained defensively. I can't tell her about the kiss or she'll tell me 'I told you so.' As much as I want to confide in her, I just can't handle it right now.
"Did you have a run in with Ethan?"
Theresa sort of laughed "I haven't spoke with him in a week." At least I'm not lying to my best friend.
"I just can't stand to see you so depressed." Whitney said comforting her.
"Thanx Whit, but I'll be okay." Theresa reassured her friend "I just need to sort through my feelings."
"So what going on with Chad." Theresa perked up and asked, changing the subject.
Whitney gave Theresa an evil look and shook her head "Don't even go there." She warned as she looked at the counter where Chad was going through some CD's.
"Simone's still not speaking to you?" Theresa asked with her nose sort of crunched up.
"Not even. She still thinks I'm trying to steal him from her."
"As if I would want to be with him." Whitney said in defense.
Theresa knew the Chad subject was very touchy, so she decided to stop while she was ahead.
"No, I'm going to stay a bit longer. I want to finish this article." Whitney explained as she dug her nose into the tennis magazine.
"Bye." Theresa said as she laid money on the table and walked out the door.
Theresa looked up at the sky. "It sure is a pretty night" She said to herself as she changed directions and headed to the park.
Ethan arrived at the Book Café moments after Theresa left.
"Chad is Theresa around?" Ethan whispered as he leaned nervously on the counter.
"No man, she left just a few minutes ago." Chad explained.
A look of frustration developed on Ethan's face.
"What's up?" Chad questioned sensing Ethan's disappointment.
"I just need to talk with her. Do you know where she was going?"
"I think home." Chad replied. "Can I help?"
"Thanx, but this is something I've gotta do myself." Ethan explained as he walked out the door.
Ethan looked down the street. "She's probably home by now. What am I going to do?" he asked himself as he kicked a few rocks and trailed off into thoughts of Theresa.
When Ethan woke from his dreaming, he found himself in the park.
All of sudden he heard a noise and spun around. He scanned the area and saw someone sitting on a swing.
He squinted his eyes the get a better look at the person. He saw a beautiful brunette sitting there sadly. Ethan's heart skipped a beat
"Theresa." He whispered.
Ethan walked almost ran to the swings then casually asked "Is this swing taken?"
Theresa was startled until she looked up and saw Ethan's soft green eyes piercing hers with a sincere expression. Her heart was jumping with joy, but her head told her to run.
"Sure, I was just leaving." Theresa smugly replied as she tried to walk away.
Ethan used both hands to hold her there. "Please, we have gotta talk." Ethan pleaded. The touch of her soft skin made Ethan's heart turn flips.
"I can't. I've gotta go home." Theresa said as she tried to wiggle from his grasp.
"Theresa, please!" Ethan begged, slowly releasing his hold as he tried to plead with his eyes.
"Okay" Theresa said in defeat searching his eyes.
"Thank you." Ethan let out a sigh of relief. He was still holding her arms. He wanted to pull her in and kiss her forever.
"If it's about last week, I'm sorry. I don't really know what happened." Theresa blurted out interrupting his thoughts. "I guarantee, it won't happened again. It was just one huge mistake."
Ethan felt as if he had just been stabbed in the heart. "A mistake?" Ethan questioned.
"Yes, mistake. You are getting married soon and … and you just missed Gwen…"
Ethan interrupted her "Slow down! I…"
Theresa kept on "Ethan, my job with your mother is very important to my future and I wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize it."
Theresa continued "Could we just forget this whole thing ever happened and be friends?"
"Friends?" Ethan repeated extremely disappointed.
If I tell her how I feel…how do I feel? What about Gwen? Ethan's head started spinning with thousands of questions he's been avoiding.
Finally, he got control "Friends, sure. We'll just pretend nothing happened." Ethan said in agreement.
If this is the only way to keep you in my life, then so be it. Ethan thought
Theresa offered him her hand and said "Friends."
Ethan took her extended hand and felt a surge as their hands touched. They smiled at each other and went their separate ways.
Ethan asked himself trying to shake the memory out of his head and focus on his mom.
"Well, Whit. I need to get going. You coming too?"
