She was celebrating her freedom upon her return to Harmony since testifying in Paris. The drug cartel wouldn’t be bothering her any longer. She gulped down a fiery whiskey while taking her new car on a joy ride, and ran into Luis’s police car again.

“What in the Hell are you doing Crane?” Luis said as he jumped out of his car. “I’m having a recurring nightmare” Sheridan cried putting her fingers through her hair “I can’t get rid of YOU!”.

“Are you okay?” the officer caressed her face. How he longed to be with her, how he wished she’d tell him why she turned on him. He’d fallen for her, but he shouldn’t have.

“Fine. Get away from me Lopez-Fritzzgerladddd!” she slurred.

“I can’t. You’re drunk, and I either have to take you home or take you in.” Luis said.

“You are not taking me home. Take me in if you have to. …I have such a headache!” She was slurring her words together, and she knew she was going to have the hangover from Hell. “If you take me home who knows what you’ll do to me. You take advantage of me…or something.”

“Now you’re not making sense, Crane. I haven’t saved your life this many times just to take advantage of you now. Sit tight, I’m calling a tow truck.” He went back to what remained of his police car and called for a towing service and another police car.

Sheridan called after him “What are you going to do to me, huh? You’ve already broke my…” she couldn’t finish. Her head throbbed her into passing out.

The officer paused before making the call to Sam. He laughed that this was the second time she’d smashed one of his police cars. ‘Chief isn’t going to believe this one’ he thought.

Call placed, and help on the way Luis took her out of her car and cradled her head in his lap as they waited for a ride to the city pen. “I broke your “what” Princess? Heaven knows it wasn’t your heart…I couldn’t have done that.”

Just then Sam pulled up. “Luis! Is everything okay?”

“Yeah Sam, we’re both fine. Sheridan’s just a little drunk.”

“A little? I’d say! Hell! She wrecked another police car, is she out to kill you Luis?”

“Well, I don’t think “KILL” is the right word Sam” Luis smiled as he lovingly stroked the locks of her golden hair.

“You haven’t fallen for the girl, have you? Damn it Luis! You know what I say about the Crane’s…”

“I know Sam! That’s what makes this so hard. I just can’t quit thinking about her. I can’t, I’ve tried.” There was a long pause. Sam knew exactly what he was talking about. Especially since Ivy had told him about Ethan. He still denied that Ethan was his son.

“What do you want to do with her?” Sam softened and changed the subject, but still angered at Luis’s obvious feelings for Sheridan.

Luis shook his head, “She made it very clear she didn’t want me to take her home. So, I guess, lock her up for the night. She’ll hate me for it in the morning…”

The next morning, Sheridan woke up in a strangely familiar place. ‘Where am I’ she thought before she sat up to face the bars of reality.

When she realized where she was, she cursed Luis under her breath. ‘Why I ought to say it to his face’ she said angering more and more.

“LUIS!” She hollered, then grabbed her head in throbbing pain.

“Yeah Crane? What is it?” He’d waited there all night.

“What happened last night?”

“What the Hell do you think? You crashed my police car like an inebriated fool!”

“Don’t yell…you’re making my head hurt. Who you callin’ a fool anyway?”

“It’s not how it sounds…” He said apologetically and reached between the bars to touch her tear stained face.

“Yeah, it never is.” She cut in and moved away. “So, are you going to make me do more community service, or what’s it going to cost me this time?” She half hoped she’d get stuck helping him at the Youth Center again, but at the same time she prayed he’d just take the money.

“I’m not your judge Sher. You’ll have to ask him. Would you like some breakfast? They don’t feed the “prisoners” very well, I thought I’d go to the Book Café and get you a big apple fritter and a coffee with cream.”

“Don’t do me any favors, okay?” She snapped and turned away from him. He ignored her comments and went anyway. Luis returned a while later with exactly as he told her a big apple fritter and a coffee. He left it black to help her through her hangover.

“Here. Don’t call it a favor.” He entered her cell as one of the guards locked them in together. “Call it a date” he said laughing and smiled his $100K smile.

“Over my dead body!” She screamed. “Guard, get him out of here!!!”

“Calm down Princess! They aren’t letting me out ‘til I’m done with you.”

“What are you talking about? And what’s with the Princess bit?”

“Would you prefer ‘Your Highness’?” Luis smiled sarcastically handing her her breakfast.

“What do you want from me Luis?” She finally said sipping her coffee and munching her donut graciously.

“The truth.” He touched her hand and their eyes met. And for a small moment, everything was perfect. Sheridan turned away afraid to let herself love him again. It was gone.

“I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.” She said getting up and walking to the other side of the cell.

He followed her, slow, reluctant, he didn’t want to face rejection again. He put his hand on her shoulder, and breathed in her scent. ‘I can’t take this’ Luis thought ‘God, help me through this’.

“Sheridan, tell me why you’re pissed off at me. Tell me why you left for Paris, without so much as a goodbye. I need to know…I can’t move on with my life until you tie the loose ends of our relationship. Please…” he paused wanting to tell her he couldn’t go on without her.

“You want to move on…you want me to finish this?”

“It’s not what I want. What is it you want? I just need to know…”

Sheridan took his hand from her shoulder and brought it to her waist, her back still toward him. “I…I don’t think I can tell you.” ‘It feels so good to have your arm around me’ she thought nearly out loud.

“Please!” he begged. “Damn it Crane! You’re not getting away from me or out of this cell ‘til I know. I’m just as stubborn as you are.”

“You’ll be sorry I told you,” she started, turning to face him.

“Let me be the judge of that…”

“The night you kissed me on the warf. You kissed me as a cover up… I dropped my scarf…I went back to get it.” She stopped. Sheridan’s blood was beginning to boil over, reminiscing of the day he broke her heart, and shattered her dreams.

“And…” he probed “it wasn’t there…”

“I didn’t find my scarf. I found you.” She snapped.

The look on Luis’s face was that of shock and amazement! “How could you have found me…”

“Cut the crap!” she interrupted. “I overheard you talking on your cell phone to one of your little cop buddies. You told him it was ‘about time you were given the chance to use one of the Crane’s’. You told him you were using me!” Her eyes welled up with tears, she could feel her heart breaking in two. The pain was more than she could take. Embarrassed that her emotions were showing on her face, she turned away from him again. “How could I have been so blind? So stupid!!”

“Sher…I…” he reached again for her hand, and she again pulled away.

“No need to explain. Can you leave now?” she sniffled.

“Not until I tell you my story…”

“It doesn’t start with ‘once upon a time’ does it?” She replied, sarcasm evident.

“No. It starts with ‘One night on the warf. I kissed you because I wanted to, not because of some facade you think I was trying to pull off.” He stopped to turn her toward him. He reached up and lightly brushed her tears as he continued, “I saw your scarf lying there after you left. I saw it as a welcome sign from God, as an excuse to come to you that night. I ran to your cottage, and was disappointed to find you weren’t there.”

“I don’t understand…” Sheridan muttered between sobs.

“I don’t either” Luis said pulling her closer. She rejected his act and pulled away. “Please Sher…Tell me how could I have been at your cottage, and saying that to someone on the warf at the same time?”

“How can I believe you?” She pleaded.

“I don’t know, but you need to.” Luis hung his head. He didn’t know how to convince her that he wasn’t lying to her. “Have I…?”

“Um, excuse me, Ms. Crane, your judge is ready to see you now.” The guard couldn’t have come at a worse moment.

“One more minute please?” Sheridan was desperate to figure out what really was going on, what Luis’s motives really were.

“One minute and counting…” the guard walked away, as a favor to Luis. He just hadn’t been himself around the station, maybe this extra few minutes would bring him to himself again.

“Have you what Luis?” Sheridan started.

Luis rested his head in his hands that were propped up on his knees. “Have I ever given you a reason not to believe me? If I have, then you have a right and reason to call me a liar…you…you mustn’t keep your judge waiting, Princess” he couldn’t look at her again. Confusion was setting in, and he just wanted to hold her in his arms and take away all the pain they were both feeling.

Stay tuned…
