Review of Ch. 4
Sheridan vows to Ethan that she will be Luis’s wife. After telling Luis her nightmares, Luis is angered and tells her he will solve the mystery…

Luis left her room, but didn’t dare leave her alone. She was in a fragile state and still shaken from reliving her nightmares. ‘What am I going to do? If she killed Papa…’

The phone rang.

“Hello Sheridan Crane residence” Luis answered gruffly.

“Hijo! Why are you not at the dance?” Pilar asked “What’s wrong?”

“Mama, Sheridan fainted so I brought her home.”

“Dear God! Is she okay?”

“Yes Mama she is okay, but can you come over? We both need to talk to you.”

“I will be there soon.” Pilar hung up the phone, and her heart sank. ‘Why is Luis upset? What happened tonight?’ She grabbed her jacket and ran out the door.

Sheridan came out of her room to find Luis pacing in the living room. Her eyes were swollen from crying. “Luis? You didn’t answer me…”

“How was I supposed to answer Sheridan? My Hell!”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t expect you to forgive me. Please… just leave. Go away. I need to be alone.”

“I’m not leaving you here alone tonight. Mama is coming over, then I’m going to the station. Does Mama know?”

Sniffling she replied “Know what?”

“Does Mama know what happened that night?” he snapped.

“She tells me I was dreaming that night Luis, but that’s all anyone tells me. Father Alistair and Julian said they sent me to Paris because I was crazy. They didn’t want me around to tarnish the ‘Crane’ name. I can only pray they’re right. …Luis…I’m so scared.” She was standing by the rail near the entrance shaking.

Luis looked deep into her eyes for the first time since she told him. Sheridan looked away, there was a frightening look of hatred in his eyes. She collapsed.

“Sheridan!!!” Luis softened and ran to her. He lifted her and noticed that she was in shock. “It’s going to be okay. I’m sorry I scared you. I just don’t know what to do sweetheart…. I’m so sorry.”

“Help me.” Sheridan said between sobs. “Help me find out what happened…I can’t live like this Luis. I can’t live without you…”

Pilar opened the door and ran in to see Sheridan on the ground with Luis hovering. “What happened, did Sheridan faint again?”

“Mama, thank God you are here!”

“Miss Sheridan, are you okay?”

“Pilar, I’ll be okay. I’m just a little on edge tonight.”

“What happened? Tell me everything.”

“We were having a wonderful time at the dance, until I spoke with Charity. She told me that if I didn’t tell Luis about my nightmares, something bad would happen. Well, I told him Pilar. You know, the nightmares that started that night?” She looked up at Luis “I’m sorry Luis, Charity must have been wrong. Something bad happened because I told you…” She paused and touched his hand “I’ll understand…if you hate me.” Sheridan turned and hugged Pilar and started sobbing again.

“Luis! What did you say to her? How did you make her so upset Hijo?”

“I’m going to the station Mama. Stay with her until I get back. I’ll tell you everything then.” He kissed his mother on the forehead and bent down near Sheridan and whispered “I still love you…Princess.”

He kissed her tear-stained cheek “I’ll be back and we’ll figure this out, together, okay?” He kissed her again before leaving.

Luis arrived at the station, and took Sam aside. “Sam, I know this is probably bad timing, but I need your help.”

“What’s up Luis?” He looked into Luis’s eyes and noticed his normal spark had about fizzled. “It’s Sheridan, isn’t it?”

“Yeah Sam, it has something to do with her.”

“You aren’t hoping to propose are you?”

“I would have, but something more important came up.” Luis sat down at his desk and looked around to make sure nobody else was listening. “I think I know what happened to Papa.”

“That’s great Luis!” Sam paused and saw the confusion and disturbance on Luis’s face. “It isn’t great, is it? Luis, what did you find out?”

“Sam, it’s not good. Sheridan told me something tonight, and it scared the Hell out of me.” He proceeded to tell him everything, and Sam sat in amazement. ‘He’s got to be pulling my leg! There’s no way!’ He kept thinking, trying desperately to hang on every word that came out of Luis’s mouth.

“I love her so much Sam. I’ve got to help her. If you don’t get someone on it, I’ll have to go on my own!”

“Luis, I don’t know what to say. I’m stunned! This is something I’m afraid we’ll have to involve the F.B.I. on. I’m so sorry if it really was your father…”

For the first time, Luis felt like he had some answers. ‘Why did Papa’s disappearance have to involve Sheridan? Damn it!!’ A tear fell from his cheek “Thanks Sam.”

Sam made the call to the F.B.I. who had Luis make a formal report on what he’d been told by Sheridan. ‘God, please don’t take her away from me now! I will do anything to keep her out of this!’ He prayed silently.

Several hours later he returned to the cottage. Pilar was in the kitchen sipping hot tea and reading, she got up when she heard the door open. “Sheridan told me everything Luis, I’ve been so worried. What is going on?”

“Everything is going to be okay, Mama. The F.B.I. is going to start the investigation first thing in the morning. It’s getting really late. Are you going home, or will you be staying here tonight?” Luis quarried.

“I’ll go home if you’ll stay. I need to talk to Theresa and Miguel.”

“NO! Don’t talk to them about this. I want to make sure it’s Papa first. Don’t scare them.”

“You know best my son…It saddens me to think he really isn’t coming back. But, I guess the Lord knows best and will take care of us. I’m going home. Take care of her Luis. Sheridan is suffering very much…she told me you were talking about marriage before she told you. Her heart is breaking.”

“I love her so much Mama, I’m sorry I hurt her tonight.”

“She’s sorry too. Good night Luis, I’ll come by in the morning to check on you both.” She kissed Luis on the cheek and left for home. It was nearly 2:30 in the morning.

“Luis…” Sheridan was calling out in her sleep. Luis still standing by the front door, he turned when he heard her and smiled. He walked quietly into her bedroom and found her tossing and turning. He undressed to his boxers and lie down next to her. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close.

“Sweet dreams Princess” he whispered before kissing her softly on her shoulder and drifting to sleep.

The warm rays of sun peeked through the curtains of Sheridan’s room waking Luis. Sheridan was still sleeping, but finally soundly. It had been a rough night for them both. Luis began having the same nightmares Sheridan had had for years, and when he’d wake it seemed she was dreaming the same thing, both of them shivering in cold sweats.

He decided to get up and make her breakfast to let her know that he still loved her. ‘I don’t think I could live without her knowing that…’ he thought searching the almost empty refrigerator. He stifled a laugh ‘We won’t be having any of this when we’re married! - Damn it Luis! Stop this! You can’t be thinking of marrying her until this investigation is over.’

He managed to find enough ingredients to make some waffles, fried eggs and orange juice. He went outside and found a perfect red rose on one of the bushes. He cut it and put it into a vase and carried the tray into his “sleeping beauty”. Gently, Luis set the tray on her night stand and knelt down beside the bed and just watched her sleep for just a minute.

“Hmmm, Luis…” Sheridan moaned in her sleep. He laughed quietly and kissed her lips and slowly backed away hoping not to wake her. Sheridan’s eyes fluttered open. She was oblivious to the fact that she wasn’t alone. She began talking to herself, staring at the ceiling of her room “That’s your most wild dream yet Miss Crane!” she laughed, then sighed “Oh, Luis!” She rolled over and gasped. “LUIS!!! What are you doing here!?!?” She scurried to cover herself with the blankets.

“Good morning Princess! So, would you like to tell me this dream of yours?”

“What are you doing here?”

“I brought you home last night after the dance, don’t you remember?”

“It wasn’t a dream then?” Luis shook his head as she threw her arms around his neck and kissed him. “I smell breakfast…”

“It was hard to decide what to fix, seeing that your fridge was empty and all. Hope you like it.” He placed the tray over her lap and fed her the first bite. “Well?”

“You are an angel sent from heaven!” She exclaimed. Luis climbed back onto the bed with her, and Sheridan noticed for the first time that he was in nothing but his boxers. “OH my God! We didn’t!?!?”
