Josh Ryan Evans Chat Transcript

Josh Ryan Evans was no stranger to television or film when he began playing the role of Timmy, Tabitha's doll that comes to life, on NBC's daytime drama, "Passions." His career started when he played "The Dancing Baby" in a popular commercial for Dreyer's/Edy's Ice Cream. Josh's film credits include "Baby Geniuses," and an upcoming part in "The Grinch," starring Jim Carrey. He also appeared as a young prodigy attorney on "Ally McBeal."

Welcome, Josh!

exteacher621: Josh, how has your life changed since becoming the talking doll on "Passions"?

Josh Ryan Evans: Well, first of all, I do online chats :) I never did that before! Second of all, it has gotten me a lot of fans that follow me everywhere, it seems like! I can always see myself on television too. Instead of having to wait after I've done the work to see it, I can see it a lot quicker.

EZguest543: How did you get the part on "Passions"?

Josh Ryan Evans: They invited me to a meeting, told me about the part, and asked me if I wanted to do it. I was really up to it after they described it! I don't remember a whole lot-it's been going so quick! :-)

curious1: Is it fun playing the role of Timmy?

Josh Ryan Evans: Loads of fun!!! That's the only reason why I do it! It's so, so fun. :-)

passionschatter: Why do you think Timmy and Tabitha are such a popular 'couple'?

Josh Ryan Evans: They are the comic relief to the show, while at the same time very mysterious. So they are playing it straight while doing a comedic comedy show. :-)

angeleyes: OK, Josh, the question on everyone's mind-how old are you really?

Josh Ryan Evans: Well, I'm 17 -- I'm a teenager. :) Some days I feel 30, and some days I feel 4! It's actually really good for Timmy. One minute he's a little kid and one minute he's drinking a martini...er, martimmy, I mean.

Martimmy: What are the ingredients in a Martimmy?

Josh Ryan Evans: It is a secret!!!! It is a secret concoction :-) I will tell you how it is prepared though. Shaken-not stirred!

rosey: I really love your storyline. No one else could do a better job. I read that you got started at the age of twelve. What advice do you have for the young kiddos?

Josh Ryan Evans: It has to be a passion. You have to keep doing it if you really want it. You must not give up. No matter how many times people put you down, believe in yourself and keep going!

JoshEvansFan: Do you see life after Tabitha? Are you committed to a long contract (I hope) on "Passions"?

Josh Ryan Evans: I am committed to a three-year contract. Timmy could do something else, but I don't think it could play off very well unless Timmy had a little evil in his life.

TIMMY4ME: What is your favorite costume you've worn so far? My guess is the adorable smoking jacket.

Josh Ryan Evans: You are correct! My second favorite that you've seen is the doctor's outfit. :)

mianna: Did you do any shows before "Passions"?

Josh Ryan Evans: I starred on "Ally McBeal" twice, so it was a re-occurring character. Oren Koolie was the name. :-) I'm also going to be in "7th Heaven" in two or three weeks. Check the "Passions" website for the date. :)

SatinAngel: I love your character on "Ally McBeal." What was it like working on that show?

Josh Ryan Evans: It was an honor and a blast at the same time! It was the first time I'd ever acted with my whole body and face. I had done Baby Geniuses before that, but they digitally replaced my head. Everybody there is great-a great cast and a great crew-unbelievable!!

bubbles: What part are you playing in the upcoming movie, "The Grinch," and what was it like working with Jim Carrey? Is he really crazy in real life?

Josh Ryan Evans: I cannot tell you the character, but Jim Carrey is great to work with from what I've seen! I'm still working with him, so I'm learning what he is like every day. He's a little comedic crazy-but he's great! You are not going to believe your eyes when you watch it!

TimmyFan: What is the difference between working on "Passions" and working on "Ally McBeal"?

Josh Ryan Evans: Loads of difference! What I mean by that is on "Passions" I do an episode per day, whereas on "Ally McBeal," I was only a guest star, and I had seven days to tape one episode. I was not a main player, unlike I am on "Passions"! It's the volume of work and the pace of the work that are different. I really have to get it right the first or second time. Whatever they film, that's going to be it!

Kassie: I saw you on A&E's "P.T. Barnum" as Tom Thumb and you were fantastic. Was it fun to work with Beau Bridges?

Josh Ryan Evans: It was an honor-it was wonderful! Beau Bridges is such a nice man and such a professional. He's been in the business his whole life and you couldn't tell. He doesn't treat you any different than any other person. I've been really, really lucky to work with some great actors, including the cast of "Ally McBeal," the cast of "Passions," and Beau Bridges-I've really worked with the best. Also with Jim Carrey, and with my production staff-my writers and producers are amazing! Everyone on "Passions" - James E. Reilly is the best in daytime, David Kelley is the best in night time, and Ron Howard is the best in film!

Kassie: Do you know when your episode on "7th Heaven" will be? I don't want to miss it!

Josh Ryan Evans: Check the "Passions" website; I don't know the exact date.:-) It may not be up there now, but it will be up there in the next day or so! www.nbc.com/passions

Kassie: You have so many fans now. How does it feel?

Josh Ryan Evans: It feels a little weird because I don't feel any different, except I'm getting treated a little different by everyone else. I've got great fan response. I got one letter that was such a sweet letter. It said, "I had a really bad day today, but when I saw you guys on television, you guys made me laugh!" It meant so much to me, that they wrote to tell me that!

cameron2: Do you have any plans for when you finish school? Will you continue to act?

Josh Ryan Evans: Yes, I will! I will continue to act if I'm permitted. I find it a gift that I am able to act. Someday I'd like to go behind the camera and direct or write! I know every actor says that, but it's the truth!

lotsalaughs: Being still in high school, do you have a tutor on the set?

Josh Ryan Evans: Yes! I do three hours a day, every day, on set. I have to keep an A to B average.

Martimmy: Will there be a "Timmy" doll in stores soon?

Josh Ryan Evans: I hope! Would you like that? :-) I don't know if I'd buy one myself, because I might find it a little creepy, but I know a few other people that would! It would have to have a clothing line too because Timmy wears so many different costumes! It would be almost like a male version of Barbie because there are so many outfits to buy. :)

Aspromonte: Hi, Josh. You really do liven up the show. Could you please tell me why Timmy always speaks in the third person? Also, how do you like working with Juliet Mills?

Josh Ryan Evans: I'll answer the second part first because it's easier :-) I love working with Juliet Mills! She is the nicest lady. She is not at all like Tabitha! Stop being upset at her...I like her! She's my friend! It's only acting :-) She's very professional, always ready to work. She is also really nice on a personal level. As to speaking in the third person, that's a secret that only Timmy knows! :) Timmy says hi!

futureauthor: I hear you are a writer on the side? Can you tell us about anything you might be working on currently?

Josh Ryan Evans: School! If I write my life story right now, it would be really short :) I will be doing a book called "Life Lessons-Learning Things Little By Little." It's to open up dialogue between parents and children. It's a project my mom is helping me on. The reason why I'm writing it is because a lot of times people will treat kids in a very poor fashion, and overlook them. Kids also have a point of view.

rosey: Why is it that Fluffy is never shown to the viewers?

Josh Ryan Evans: I just read the stuff, I don't write them! :) They haven't told me. It's still a secret between Timmy and Tabitha.

JesseMetcalfeFan: Hey cutie!!!!!! I love you!!! >:) Is there anyone on the show you wish you could work with more? :) Keep up the good work!!

Josh Ryan Evans: I love to work with anyone from the cast! It is such a great cast. I feel I really lucked out because I think they are all great actors and great characters, especially anyone in the Crane Mansion! Timmy wants to live there:-)

martimmy832: Do you think the community "Passions" is based in reality or exaggerated to make fun of American society today?

Josh Ryan Evans: It's a soap opera! It's meant to entertain-it's a show! You have to go with it-you can't analyze it. :-)

cultoftimmy: Is Timmy ever going to overcome his fear of Fluffy and beat him in a battle?

Josh Ryan Evans: You never know-I'm hoping for a Fluffy fur coat! The sad thing is that I love kitties-all kinds! I have one at home right now waiting for me.

MOONLIGHT: How did you feel when your character was put in a washing machine by Tabitha?

Josh Ryan Evans: Cleaner! And starch free! A little bubbly :) But that's working in a soap opera for you!

JesseMetcalfeFan: Hey, Josh! Are you anything like your character on the show? If so, how? :)

Josh Ryan Evans: I guess you could say I'm funny-I have a sense of humor. I feel like I get in the same silly predicaments! Every character I play, I bring as much of myself into it as possible.

tyroneusd: Did you see Janeane Garafalo on "The Martin Short Show" yesterday? She gave the biggest plug for "Passions"! She's in love with the show and mentioned Timmy. You now have celebrity fans... :)

Josh Ryan Evans: I did see it! And how cool is that?? :-) Apparently she has a 'passion' for it!

ABCDEFG12: Are there any plans for Timmy to find a girl doll and fall in love?

Josh Ryan Evans: Again-stay tuned! Only they (the writers) know :)

cultoftimmy: Josh, what are your hobbies?

Josh Ryan Evans: Movies and everything about "Star Wars"! I love television movies and "Star Wars." :) (Did I say "Star Wars"?)

TimmyFan: What has been your favorite scene to film so far?

Josh Ryan Evans: The whole episode of Timmy mourning over Tabitha, because basically that is all one scene. That's the way I view it. It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen and the most dialogue I'd ever done by myself without any actor to feed off of or any break in the scene!

JRE-Fan: Apart from natural acting talent, have you studied acting with a coach? Your acting has a lot of heart and believability.

Josh Ryan Evans: Yes, I have! I've worked with a few coaches, but my primary acting coach is Kevin McDermott of Center Stage, L.A. He was my first acting coach and has continued with me all through the years.

chase44: How long does it take you to get ready for the show?

Josh Ryan Evans: It takes me about ten minutes getting makeup, 15 minutes in wardrobe, and they do about a half and hour rehearsal. So that is about what it takes to actually get into the filming process. Maybe 10 minutes waking up too :)

lilTimmy: How does your acting style on "Passions" compare to your work on "Baby Genuises"?

Josh Ryan Evans: It's totally different because my acting style on "Baby Genuises" had me portraying everything the character was doing with my body. It was actually a very genuine type of acting because you have to make sure you are getting your point across, even though you aren't saying any words! So I guess you could say acting on "Passions" is easier.

pyza: Do you watch yourself on "Passions"?

Josh Ryan Evans: Every day! I like to watch and critique what I've done-and I like the show a lot! It's the first soap opera I've watched with this intensity!

Becca1231: Josh, do you ever visit your fan sites? If so, what do you think of them?

Josh Ryan Evans: Yes, I do! I'm astonished that they even exist! Then when I see what kind of time they've devoted to it-I'm very, very grateful that someone would do that for just me! Like I said, I'm not different, but now I see how everyone else is treating me different, so I feel different. I still act like a teenager every day, like any teenager- with a cat that is :)

fluffy3: Josh, will the other people in Harmony ever find out Timmy's not a doll, but real?

Josh Ryan Evans: I hope so! I don't think Timmy can keep the gig up much longer. He's slowly almost getting discovered all the time. It's up to them, (the writers) and you are going to have to tune in! :)

Chanel_05: Josh, do you prefer playing the villain or the good guy?

Josh Ryan Evans: Yes! I love playing Timmy because he's a little bit of both-he can do either :) So far playing the villian has sometimes been more fun because he can go more over the top with it.

giggles3434: How does it feel to be one of the most favorite actors on the show?

Josh Ryan Evans: First of all, thank you! It just feels very gratifying that my work is appreciated and recognized like it is.

queenmarcia: Do you get tired of talking in the third person, or do you do it at home by habit?

Josh Ryan Evans: No, I do not do it at home by habit :) It's hard to do it on the set because sometimes it would be natural to say "me" or "we" and instead, I have to stop myself and say "Timmy" and "Tabitha"-they are always doing it a different way. I forget it sometimes, but they always remind me! I have gotten in the habit of doing it on the set!

Boni: What is it like to work on a show like "Passions" after doing a movie like "P.T Barnum"?

Josh Ryan Evans: A pleasure! With a movie it is a totally different environment, and with the type of film it was, I got a lot of variety in my life. "Passions" is something totally unlike anything else! I'd never done a soap before, so it's a whole new experience.

tyroneusd: Who's your best friend on the set?

Josh Ryan Evans: My mother has always been my friend, and she is on the set! :) Everyone is really a good friend, especially Marina, my makeup artist, and Judy, my dialogue coach. We have Nintendo Gameboy Tetris tournaments all the time! And, of course, Juliet Mills!

honeykitty: If you could be any color of crayon, what color would you be?

Josh Ryan Evans: I'd be a rainbow! I know-that sounds weird :)

PassioNutz: What big time movie sequel would you like to be a part of?

Josh Ryan Evans: "Star Wars"! Let me rephrase-"Star Wars"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Did I say "Star Wars"?????????????????)

Kassie: You are so bright and talented for such a young man. Do your parents encourage you?

Josh Ryan Evans: Yes, my mother is constantly doing it. I love the support I'm getting from my family! Hi, Grandma!

TimmyFan963: Does Timmy make YOU laugh?

Josh Ryan Evans: All the time!

Chat-R: Do you have any advice for a small person who is trying to make it through school?

Josh Ryan Evans: No, because I'm learning new things every day. Don't let what small-minded people say get to you. I have a brother who is 6'4", and he used to tease me like any big brother. I never let it get to me though! He never really teased me about my size. I would really say I've never been tall, so I don't feel like I have been picked on or anything. I like the size I am; I feel like I am more 'down to Earth'! Excuse the pun :) The way I look at it, even cell phones are getting to be my size now, so I think we are getting ready to take over the world! Smaller people are ruling! Have you tried to get an airplane seat lately?

Holly: Josh, would you say you're a villain on the show, or a victim of Tabitha's?

Josh Ryan Evans: Both! Actually, not a victim, I take that back. I'm a tad bit a victim, but mostly villain. I'm Timmy! Timmy might get even one day-you don't know! Maybe Timmy is playing the victim-you don't know that!
