Sam was devastated when he thought his first love, Ivy, had dumped him without warning. After her wedding to Julian when she overheard Julian and Alistair talking about what a great business deal the marriage was, she ran away and fled to Sam. They both realized that Ivy and Julian's fathers deceived them both and promised that nothing would come between them, they made love and Ethan was conceived that night. Ivy left and said she'd meet him again later that night and they'd hightail to Boston. It didn't happen. Ivy's father and Alistair made her get on that honeymoon plane and so she left on it leaving just Pilar to tell Sam she wasn't ever coming. While on the plane, Ivy told herself that she would never tell anyone the baby she was carrying was Sam's; she would pass it off as a Crane to get revenge on Alistair. Sam left for Boston and rarely came home for 4 years.

Grace, meanwhile, had left her family farm to travel the world and do some soul searching. 4 years later, she was told by an angel to move from her current apartment into one in another building, Sam's building; she did. Tabitha set a fire in the apartment to kill Grace because she was a Standish woman, and the Standish women possess tremendous powers of goodness. Fortunately, Sam rescued her just in time. But when she woke up, she had amnesia and couldn't remember anything of the first 20 or so years of her life. Sam was there for her and they fell in love, (like all soulmates do).

They married and moved back to Harmony, where Sam became the police chief and Grace opened up a bed and breakfast and a craft store. They had 3 kids: Noah, Kay, and Jessica. They were happy. When Faith died in a fire, they took in Charity. Sam, meanwhile, all throughout the 20 years of their marriage had never told Grace about his past with Ivy. Because of this, Grace became friends with Ivy and didn't think Sam and Ivy had ever once had a past many years ago. Sam never told Grace because he didn't want to see her get hurt.

Ivy, meanwhile, took advantage of Grace not knowing. She did everything she could to get Sam back. On a ski trip she got completely naked in Sam and Grace's room and of course Sam told her to get out; but not before Grace saw. He managed to convince Grace that she had too much to drink and it never happened. This cycle went on for a long time, with Ivy scheming and Sam convincing Grace everything was okay.

Sam and Grace were overjoyed when they found out she was pregnant with another child. They hoped it would be a boy, Sam could have a second son. (Of course neither of them knew that Ethan was Sam's son, and Sam and Ethan hated each other.)

They happiness would be short lived. At Ethan and Theresa's engagement party the tabloid came out with the headline that Ethan was Sam's son and that Ivy and Sam had once been lovers. The shock caused Grace to fall down the stairs. She was rushed to the hospital where she collapsed again when she saw Sam hug Ivy. This time, she lost the baby, a baby boy.

Grace could not forgive Sam for lying to her about Ivy. When their house sunk into an abyss, Grace, Jessica, and Charity stayed over at Tabitha's, Kay stayed over at Miguel's, and Grace made Sam not sleep in the same house with her because she claimed he had to work out his feelings for Ivy. He stayed over at the police station bunker and vowed to himself to repair his marriage. Ivy continued to scheme to get Sam and almost succeeded.

At Luis and Sheridan's engagement party, evil took over and caused Sam to say to Ivy that he loved her and her kissed her, right when Grace came in and saw. Sam realized what had happened and tried to convince Grace he didn't mean it. She didn't believe him. She left and Sam left too but not before rejecting Ivy.

One night Sam was dreaming of his estranged wife and none other than Ivy came in, stripped down, and crawled into bed with him. Sam woke up and told her to get out. She said that if she would, she'd go out dressed the way she was right there, with nothing on. She said she put some clothes on if he would kiss her. He kissed her just to get her to leave, when low and behold, Grace entered. She had been persuaded by Jessica to go to Sam and forgive him and trust him. She agreed. When she got there she was in shock. Then Ivy, who was wrapped in a blanket, unveiled herself to show she had nothing on, Grace left in disgust. Sam yelled at Ivy for blackmailing him into giving her that one last kiss and for ruining the chance he had at reconciling with his wife. Then Grace came back in. She said she heard everything, and glared angrily at Ivy. The two women got into an argument about who belonged with Sam. Grace said she did because she was wearing his ring. She said it with such force and passion it looked like she had forgiven Sam and trusted him again. It was true; she had.

The next morning after Sam and Grace made love (they had reconciled)! Ivy came back and was ready to get into bed with Sam until she saw Grace. They both told her that they were back together and nothing could tear them apart, not even her wicked schemes; nothing had ever broken them up and nothing ever would. Ivy finally got the message and left.

But soon another threat to Sam and Grace's marriage arose: David Hastings. He claimed he was Grace's husband whom she married over 20 years ago. This meant Sam and Grace weren't legally married! David even showed them the marriage license and the priest who married them even came to convince them. Sam took forever to believe it. Ivy, of course, decided to take advantage of it to try to get Sam back. But Sam and Grace will get through this, they're soulmates, it's true love. Nothing can split true love apart.
